The White Room: What We Can Learn from Accomplished People in Santa Barbara and Montecito

The White Room is an independent nonprofit project created in Santa Barbara and Montecito by Kate Kolody, founder of VESNA©. At its core are carefully prepared conversations with people who possess deep professional experience and exceptional command of their field.

Each episode is developed around a specific individual. The team studies the guest’s career, area of expertise, and the decisions that have shaped their work, then develops the topic and questions specifically around that person.

There is no standard script for The White Room. The substance of each conversation is determined by what that particular guest can meaningfully share with the audience.

At the center of the project is practical knowledge: how someone makes difficult decisions, what years of experience have taught them to notice, which principles guide their work, and what they have learned through practice. The purpose of each episode is to make that experience clear, substantive, and accessible to others.

The White Room grew from this idea. Much of the most valuable knowledge remains embedded in people’s professional experience and is rarely given the opportunity to be documented in depth. The project creates a space where accomplished people can speak about what they know best, allowing their experience to become part of a broader intellectual exchange.

For Kate Kolody, understanding how people think and make decisions has long been part of her professional work. It informs VESNA©’s approach to commercial decision-making and buying behavior and is further explored in her book, 140 Strategies That Drive Buying Decisions.

In The White Room, that same interest is explored through people themselves — their professional judgment, accumulated knowledge, and approaches to solving complex problems.

The project’s name reflects its central metaphor. The White Room is a neutral space that each new guest fills with their own ideas, experience, and way of seeing the world. As a result, every episode develops its own subject, character, and internal logic while remaining part of a consistent editorial language.

The White Room is being built as an open intellectual archive. Its educational and cultural purpose is to preserve valuable experience and make it available through substantive conversations that can be revisited over time.

Santa Barbara and Montecito serve as the production base for the first season and the source of some of its guests. The project’s subjects and audience extend far beyond the region.

The White Room is intended for people interested in how others think, professional mastery, creative work, growth, and meaningful achievement.

The first production cycle begins in fall 2026. The first episodes will be released in early October.
